What is Shopify Development?
Shopify development is the practice of building, customising, and integrating stores on Shopify — the fully hosted SaaS e-commerce platform headquartered in Ottawa, Canada. Shopify powers roughly 10% of all online stores globally (per Shopify's own 2024 reporting) and processes hundreds of billions of dollars in annual GMV. Unlike Magento or WooCommerce, Shopify hosts, scales, and patches the platform itself — your team focuses entirely on the theme, the apps, and the data. Named brands on Shopify: Allbirds, Gymshark, Heinz DTC, Kylie Cosmetics, MrBeast, Tesla Merchandise.
Our Shopify practice covers four output paths: custom Online Store 2.0 themes hand-coded from Figma / PSD / XD designs; Shopify Plus enterprise builds with B2B, multi-store, and Shopify Functions; custom apps (public and merchant-specific) on the Storefront / Admin GraphQL APIs; and headless storefronts with Hydrogen, Next.js, or Vue/Nuxt consuming the Storefront API. For fixed-scope design conversion, see our design to Shopify conversion service.
Shopify vs Shopify Plus — Plan Choice
Most Shopify-dev SERP pages quietly conflate the two. Honest matrix:
Shopify (Basic / Shopify / Advanced)
- Best for SMB and growth-stage merchants — most Shopify stores you've ever seen are on these tiers.
- Standard API rate limits — sufficient for most stores.
- Standard checkout — limited customisation; Shopify Functions limited to higher tiers.
- Plans from ~$29 to $399/month (Shopify Advanced).
- No dedicated launch manager; standard 24/7 support.
Shopify Plus
- Enterprise tier, from ~$2,300/month (variable based on GMV).
- Shopify Functions — checkout discount, delivery, payment, and cart-transform customisation in production.
- Native B2B — Companies, B2B Catalogs, customer-specific pricing, payment terms, draft orders.
- Shopify Organization for multi-store / multi-region from one admin.
- Higher API rate limits, Launch Engineer support, Shopify Audiences, Shopify Flow advanced workflows.
- Wholesale, automation, and access to the latest checkout-customisation APIs first.
Liquid OS 2.0 vs Hydrogen Headless — Stack Choice
Two officially supported Shopify storefront stacks. Most agencies only build Liquid. We build both. Quick guide:
- Liquid + OS 2.0 (default) — sections-everywhere theme architecture, JSON template files, metafields with dynamic sources, the full theme editor, every Shopify App Store app. Right for almost every store.
- Hydrogen on Oxygen — Shopify's React-based headless framework deployed on Shopify's edge runtime (Oxygen). Right when you need a fully custom front-end stack, complex animations and routing that Liquid won't deliver cleanly, or you're unifying a brand site and a store on one React app.
- Next.js / Nuxt 3 + Storefront API — when you want headless commerce but on infrastructure you already run (Vercel, Cloudflare). Same Storefront API access as Hydrogen.

Some FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
01. What is Shopify development and how is it different from Shopify Plus?
Shopify development is the practice of building stores on Shopify — the fully hosted SaaS e-commerce platform that powers ~10% of all online stores globally and roughly $260 billion in GMV annually. Shopify (Basic, Shopify, Advanced plans) suits SMB and growth-stage merchants. Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier, adding higher API limits, Shopify Functions for checkout customisation, multi-store organisation, dedicated launch managers, and the Shopify Scripts editor (legacy) / Functions API (current). We build on both; the platform is the same, the enterprise features differ.
02. Do you build on Online Store 2.0 (OS 2.0) themes?
Yes, exclusively for new builds. OS 2.0 is the modern Shopify theme architecture (released 2021) that lets every template page (product, collection, cart, blog, custom) be edited with sections and blocks in the theme editor — not just the homepage. It also unlocks JSON template files, metafields with dynamic sources, and theme app extensions. We never ship vintage (pre-OS-2.0) themes for new projects. If your existing theme is vintage, we migrate it.
03. Do you handle headless Shopify and Hydrogen?
Yes. Headless Shopify decouples the storefront from Shopify's admin — Shopify remains the commerce engine, but the customer-facing store is built as Hydrogen (Shopify's React framework deployed on Oxygen), Next.js with the Storefront API, Nuxt 3, or a custom React SPA. This is the right path for unified marketing-and-store experiences or stores needing complex interactive UI. For most stores the standard OS 2.0 Liquid theme is the right answer — see our design to Shopify conversion service for an honest Liquid vs Hydrogen comparison.
04. Can you migrate my store from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, or another platform?
Yes. We use Matrixify or the official Shopify Store Importer for product, customer, and order data; preserve SEO equity via 301-redirect mapping (every legacy URL maps to its Shopify equivalent); rebuild the storefront as a custom Shopify theme matching your design; and validate the migration with a staging-shop replay before cutover. Migration scope and pricing depend on the source platform, catalogue size, and app ecosystem.
05. Can you build or customise Shopify apps?
Yes. Public apps (listed in the Shopify App Store), custom apps (built for a single merchant and installed via a custom-app link), and theme app extensions. We use Shopify's App Bridge for embedded admin UIs, Polaris for the admin design system, and the Storefront API or Admin GraphQL API as the data layer. For Shopify Plus we also build with Shopify Functions for checkout discount customisation, delivery customisation, and cart-transform logic.
06. How do you handle Shopify B2B?
Shopify's native B2B features (available on Shopify Plus) cover customer-specific catalogues, B2B pricing rules, payment terms, draft orders, and company-account hierarchies — much improved since the 2023 B2B-on-Shopify release. We set up Companies, B2B Catalogs, and Customer-specific Quantity Rules; build B2B-specific theme variants and storefront flows; and integrate with ERP/CRM for sync. For complex B2B with deep workflow needs (RFQ, multi-level approvals), Magento / Adobe Commerce may still be the better fit — we will tell you honestly.
07. How do you ensure speed and Core Web Vitals?
Lean Liquid (no nested includes that explode the render tree), deferred non-critical JavaScript, lazy-loaded images and below-fold sections, inline critical CSS, and an aggressive audit of app footprint — most slow Shopify stores are slow because of stacked apps, not the theme. We measure against Google Lighthouse and the Shopify built-in speed report, target 90+ scores, and report actual numbers at delivery — not aspirational ones.
08. How much does it cost and how long does it take?
Inner pages start at $149; a Shopify home page is $339. A small custom Shopify OS 2.0 theme (5–10 sections, basic product templates) runs about 2–3 weeks; a mid-size store with custom sections, advanced metafields, app integrations, and migration runs 4–8 weeks; Shopify Plus B2B and headless Hydrogen builds are scoped per project. We confirm fixed scope and timeline in writing before kickoff.
